Artist Palette Weathervane

The Artist Palette Weathervane began as a personal commission created for a sculptor. Rather than approaching the palette simply as a familiar symbol of art, the design evolved through the personality and creative life of the artist for whom it was made.

Much of the character of the finished weathervane was defined by her. That collaboration transformed a recognizable artist’s palette into something far more individual—a handcrafted copper sculpture created for a person whose own life was devoted to making art.

The result reflects an important part of SkyArt Studio’s work: a custom weathervane can begin with a familiar object or idea, but through collaboration with the person commissioning it, become something entirely its own.

Created for a Sculptor

Artists understand form differently. For a sculptor especially, shape, dimension, balance, and the relationship between positive and negative space are fundamental parts of the creative process.

Those qualities became important to the Artist Palette Weathervane as it developed. The commission was not simply about placing an artist’s symbol on a rooftop. It was about creating a dimensional object that reflected the sensibility of the sculptor who commissioned it.

Her influence helped define the piece, making the finished weathervane as much a record of the collaboration as a representation of an artist’s palette.

The palette itself has a fascinating place in the history of art. To see an actual palette and brushes preserved from one of America’s best-known artists, explore James McNeill Whistler’s palette and brushes at the Smithsonian Archives of American Art.

Handcrafted Copper Sculpture

The Artist Palette Weathervane is individually handcrafted using traditional copper-forming techniques developed through years of experience.

Rather than being cut as a flat metal silhouette, the design is formed into a dimensional, swell-bodied copper sculpture. The contours are worked by hand to give the piece depth and presence while retaining a strong architectural silhouette when viewed against the sky.

The copper components are shaped, refined, and assembled individually rather than stamped or mass-produced. The process is closer to sculpture than manufacturing—particularly appropriate for a piece originally commissioned by a sculptor.

When a Commission Becomes Personal

Some of the most interesting custom weathervanes begin with very little more than an idea.

A client may bring a photograph, drawing, object, profession, memory, or symbol that has personal significance. From there, the design develops through conversation and collaboration until it becomes something that could not have been created in quite the same way for anyone else.

The Artist Palette Weathervane is an example of that process. Although the palette is universally recognizable, this particular interpretation grew from the artist who commissioned it.

That distinction is at the heart of custom work: the subject provides the starting point, but the individual behind the commission gives the sculpture its story.

Available Finishes

The Artist Palette Weathervane can be created in natural copper or with hand-applied decorative finishes including faux bronze and verdigris patina. Selected details may also be accented with genuine 23-karat gold leaf.

Natural copper will gradually develop its own patina with exposure to the elements, allowing the surface of the sculpture to continue changing over time.

Custom Made by SkyArt Studio

Every SkyArt Studio weathervane is individually commissioned and handcrafted rather than mass-produced. A design can begin with an idea, drawing, photograph, object, architectural detail, profession, or personal story.

The Artist Palette Weathervane demonstrates what can happen when the person commissioning the work becomes part of that creative process. It is not simply a weathervane about an artist—it is a piece whose design was shaped by an artist.

SkyArt Studio welcomes commissions for original weathervanes developed around the interests, work, history, or imagination of the individual client.
