1883 Banner Weathervane

Our 1883 Banner Weathervane combines the strong horizontal form of a traditional architectural banner with a prominent historic date. The elongated silhouette creates a distinctive presence against the sky, while the numerals make the year an integral part of the design and give the weathervane an immediate connection to history and place.

Handcrafted in copper by SkyArt Studio & Gallery, this 1883 Banner Weathervane was individually fabricated with careful attention to proportion, balance, detail, and durability. The silhouette construction creates a crisp, recognizable profile while durable metals are incorporated into the fabrication where needed for strength and long-term outdoor use.

Dates have long appeared in architectural ornament as a way of recording the construction, founding, restoration, or other important milestone associated with a building or property. Incorporated into stonework, plaques, signs, metalwork, and other architectural details, a date can become part of the identity and history of a structure.

The 1883 Banner Weathervane carries that tradition into handcrafted architectural metalwork. The year becomes more than an inscription; it is incorporated directly into the silhouette and overall composition of the banner, allowing the date to remain clearly visible when the weathervane is viewed from the ground.

This concept can also be adapted for other meaningful dates. A founding year, construction date, anniversary, family milestone, or historically significant year can be incorporated into a custom banner design, creating a weathervane specifically connected to a building, property, institution, or family.

The proportions of the banner and numerals can be adapted to complement the architecture on which the weathervane will be displayed. Scale and viewing distance are particularly important with dated banners so that both the overall silhouette and the numerals remain visually balanced and recognizable.

The 1883 Banner Weathervane comes with our standard assembly, including two copper balls, brass retainer rings, a brass directional set, and stainless-steel mast. We use high-quality materials and components throughout the assembly with an emphasis on durability, proper function, and long-term outdoor performance.

The finish can be customized in faux bronze, verdigris, or 23-karat gold leaf. Natural copper is also available and will gradually develop its own distinctive patina through exposure to the elements.

SkyArt Studio & Gallery can assist with proper sizing, installation questions, and custom design requirements for an 1883 Banner Weathervane or another custom dated banner. Diagrams or schematics can also be provided when coordination with contractors or other installation professionals is required, helping ensure that the finished weathervane is appropriately scaled and installed for its architectural setting.
